Lessons From a 50K: How to Tackle Big Goals With Purpose and Grit
Recently, I completed my first 50K ultramarathon. It was wet, exhausting, and exhilarating all at once—a day I’ll never forget.
The journey took me across a flat gravel trail winding through the stunning, tree-lined terrain of Washington state. Vibrant fall leaves provided a breathtaking distraction from the miles stretching ahead. By the end, I felt proud, fulfilled, and deeply reflective.
This experience wasn’t just about crossing a finish line; it was a reminder of how we can tackle big, audacious goals—whether at work or in life. Here are three strategies I leaned on during my training and race day that can help you achieve your own ambitious goals:
1. Align with a Purpose
Big goals feel more achievable when they connect to something meaningful. Purpose fuels perseverance.
For my first marathon, I ran to fundraise for cancer research. This time, my purpose was to help my friend Becca complete her first ultra. Knowing my efforts would contribute to something greater than myself kept me motivated through every mile.
In the workplace, the same principle applies. When you or your team can see how your work contributes to a larger vision, it inspires greater effort and commitment.
2. Team Up
Big goals are rarely achieved alone. Surround yourself with collaborators, cheerleaders, or coaches who can help you stay the course.
Becca and I joined a run/walk group to train for the ultra. These amazing teammates kept us accountable, cheered us on, and turned grueling long runs into opportunities for jokes, camaraderie, and encouragement.
At work, teamwork is just as vital. Whether it’s brainstorming, executing, or offering support, having the right people alongside you can turn a daunting project into a rewarding adventure.
3. Overcome Obstacles
No goal worth pursuing comes without challenges. The key is to adapt and keep moving forward.
During training, I cracked several ribs when I tripped in the dark during an early morning run. The injury sidelined me for weeks—a frustrating setback for someone who values steady progress. However, it gave Becca time to recover from her own leg injury. Together, we adjusted our training plan and found a way to the finish line.
In professional settings, setbacks like resource constraints or unexpected delays are inevitable. Success often hinges on your ability to pivot, re-strategize, and keep going despite the hurdles.
Celebrating the Journey
At the Willapa Trail Festival—ironically abbreviated “WTF”—I found myself asking that very question around mile 20: “Why am I doing this?” But crossing that finish line with Becca answered it.
We achieved something we once thought impossible. And it wasn’t just about finishing; it was about the journey—finding purpose, leaning on others, and overcoming every roadblock with grit and joy.
Next time you face a daunting goal, ask yourself: What’s my purpose? Who’s on my team? How can I adapt when challenges arise?
With those answers, you can achieve more than you ever imagined.
